ARTPEERS is excited to debut a dance film made in the middle of the 2017 solar eclipse: And Spiders Will Destroy Their Own Webs. This work features some of Michigan’s best dancers and filmmakers, with musicians from Grand Rapids symphony and opera led by Detroit trip-hop producer Matt Black. We traveled to Lebanon, TN, to create this piece in real time, during the eclipse. An ARTPEERS collaboration with DITA, Sidecar Studios, Green Frog Photo, and Matt Black Music. Made possible by Wege Foundation.

And Spiders Will Destroy Their Own Webs (29mins) was filmed in the “path of totality,” or center, of the 2017 solar eclipse, in Lebanon, TN (USA). This work features some of Michigan’s best dancers and filmmakers, with musicians from Grand Rapids symphony and opera led by Detroit trip-hop producer Matt Black.

We traveled to Lebanon, TN, to create this piece in real time, during the eclipse. We filmed with high-end RED cameras in sticky, 100 degree weather. The very next day a storm overtook our camp as we pulled away, flooding the dry creek bed we had traversed during the eclipse.

This unique project is the result of a collaboration between ARTPEERS and DITA, Sidecar Studios, Green Frog Photo, and Matt Black Music. Made possible by support from Wege Foundation.

What is the ‘Path of Totality’?

The path of totality is a narrow path across the hemisphere inside of which a solar eclipse is experienced in totality: viewers see the Moon totally block the Sun, revealing the star’s outer atmosphere, called the corona. Additionally, viewers in the path of totality are free to remove protective eyewear during “Third Contact,” when the eclipse is in full effect.

Why the animal references?

The dance film references animal behaviors during an eclipse, which markedly change as the ambient light decreases and tangible, atmospheric changes take place.

Who created this dance film?

ARTPEERS is a Michigan-based arts collective that traveled to Tennessee during the 2017 solar eclipse with dancers from DITA, filmmakers from Sidecar Studios and Green Frog Photo, and professional symphony and opera musicians paired with Detroit’s Peace to Mateo.
